Help put an END to Homelessness in Burke County.
Founded in 2006 by David and Kathy Collins of Morganton, The House of Refuge has supplied a need for homeless men in Burke County. David and Kathy selflessly invited homeless men to stay in their own home. They deposited $300 a month of their own money into an account in hopes of one day having enough to build or rent an actual homeless shelter. Word slowly spread of the kindness David and Kathy were showing their community and others expressed an interest in helping. Soon a board of directors was formed. 501c3 tax status was applied for and rewarded and The House of Refuge was being born.
Infancy brought the gift of a building. A local business man bought the building and agreed to rent it for a whole dollar per year! Fundraising and renovations began and with hope and prayer came the monies for the sprinkler system, bunk beds, kitchen and laundry appliances, tables and chairs.
We currently have the capability to sleep 16 per night and stay full year round. Less than 40% of our annual budget is supplied through state and federal grants. We are dependent on private donations and foundation grants.
